I randomly stumbled upon a gem of a wine shop located in the West Village, called Uncorked Wine Co., when I was stocking up on some wine for a potluck I was hosting that evening [future post to come]. What I thought was an ordinary wine shop, was nothing less than a magical experience. I got to taste the wine before purchasing!! What a simple yet novel concept?! I was greeted and welcomed by the owner himself, Paul, who took the time to guide me through the selection process. As someone who is pretty clueless about wine, and has a difficult time articulating what I like, being able to taste the wine before purchasing is ideal.
The shop is equipped with some very fancy looking machines that temper the wine appropriately, and pour tasting-size portions into wine glasses. The shop has about 20+ wines on hand to taste at all times. The wines range from $10-$2,000, so whether you’re looking to be a thrifty spender or a baller, you’ll be covered. I kept my wine purchases to under $20 a bottle, and couldn’t have been happier with my selection. With Paul’s help, I selected an awesome Malbec and blend of Sauvignon Blanc & Chardonnay [2010 Layer Cake and 2010 Paolo Scavino, Langhe Bianco].

It was extremely comforting to know exactly what the wine tasted like.
Also good to know is that Uncorked hosts private events. They do wine and cheese pairings hosted by Murray’s Cheese [yum!], and often feature chefs and wine makers from around the world. What a great idea for a small event! I will definitely be looking into this.
Even better to know is that delivery within Manhattan is free with no minimum spend required; purchasing a mixed case of bottles will get you a discount [20% for 12 bottles and 10% for 6 bottles]; and Uncorked offers a club card [10 purchases gets you a $20 credit].
